ASSIGNMENT 2: CREATIVE CAPTURE (PART 2)

PART 2: SEEING ORDINARY THINGS IN DIFFERENT WAY


PROJECT 1: PICK-A-SOMETHING

LOCATION: Around UTM campus, Hutan Bandar Mutiara Rini and Jaya Jusco.

I decided to choose ROUND theme for this project. I captured a collection of round things surrounding me from anywhere i went. Let's see some of photos that i have captured.

Review: I choose the round theme to capture all of those photos. But truly, kinda hard for me to find round things. Some photos that I took just look kinda boring. Anyway, this is process of learning. For picture no. 3 (No Honk) , I captured it using low angle and the no honk sign is in focus and the background is blurred. I used f/5 in aperture so that i can get less depth of field. For picture no. 6 (Taiji Wheel), I was using balance concept. For picture no. 10 (Widmill), I set the shutter speed 1/6s so that the windmill shows motion or look like blur and the motion looks like round shape. For picture no. 13 (Bamboo lamp), I used f/5 so that the less light enter to the camera and focus the bamboo light and the sorrounding would be darker. For picture no. 14 (Donuts), I used f/4.5 so that the strawberry donut is in focus and the rest is blurred.

ASSIGNMENT 2: CREATIVE CAPTURE (PART 1)

PART 1: GET CREATIVE WITH SHUTTER SPEED AND APERTURE

Review on Set 1: All 4 photos in this Set 1 were using Aperture Priority. From Set 1, I can see that the different depth of field in each of photo whereas starting from f/7.1 to f/22, from less depth of field to more depth of field. The f/7.1 and f/11 are categorized in less depth of field. From here, I can see that, the very right flower is in focus and the rest of the picture is blurred. However, for the f/16 and f/22, the entire flower is in focus and most of the background is in focus. The f/16 and f/22 are categorized in more depth of field. Overall, this Set 1 is where i learned to shoot photos in different aperture setting.

Review on Set 2: All 4 photos in Set 2 were using Manual Setting. Here I want to capture different exposure of this scene. Here I can see that, the 3 photos at the top looks slightly dark from each other. It looks like under exposure. However, the last photos looks like the right exposure has been taken. I think i just need to change the aperture and shutter speed setting till get the right exposure for me. And also the ISO setting also play important role for camera's sensitivity to light. I think ISO 100 for last photo is right ISO setting.

Review on Set 3: For Set 3, I was playing with the Aperture setting where i change only the aperture setting, and the rest like shutter speed and ISO setting i was keeping it the same. The photos that i captured was turned dark and darker. It looks like the exposure of the photos looks under exposure as the aperture getting smaller from f/3.6 to f/11. This happen because the smaller the aperture, the less light to enter the camera and hit the sensor.

Review on Set 4: In Set 4 photos, I want to see the motion of the water when adjusting the shutter speed setting. From top to bottom of the photos are different shutter speed setting from 1/25s to 1/400s. From what I can see here, 1/25s in shutter speed setting makes the water looks like blurs or shows motion. However, the 1/100s and 1/400s in shutter speed setting makes the water looks like in freezes motion.

Review on Set 5: For set 5, I was using different shutter speed setting. I want to see how the pictures will turn out to be. What I can see from here, the pictures from top to bottom looks like over exposure till under exposure. The pictures of 1/1250s looks darker as the shutter speed moves fast. The pictures of 1/4s, 1/15s and 1/40s look brighter as the shutter speed moves slow. So, the shutter speed setting also control the brighter or the darker of your image. As well as aperture effects the exposure.

REVIEW ON ASSIGNMENT 1 (ANGLE AND COMPOSITION)

Review on Assignment 1 (Angle and Composition)

We've been asked to capture 10 photos of life at UTM (Universiti Teknologi Malaysia) based on five concepts that we learned in class which are (1)Simplicity, (2)Balance, (3) Rule of thirds, (4) Framing and (5) Line for Part 1(Basic Composition). All of the photos i captured in UTM campus (i.e: UTM Stadium, UTM Tasik Ilmu, Masjid Sultan Ismail). In addition we also have been asked to choose two or three subject/object in the university campus to photograph from a number of different angles for Part 2 (Angles and Interpretations). For this part 2, I choose three subject which are staircase, bridge and postbox.

1. What part of the assignment was most difficult to demonstrate in your photo?

For this assignment 1, the most difficult part was Part 1 (Basic Composition). The concepts that i hardly to demonstrate is framing concept compared to other concepts. I managed to capture the framing concept at surrounding of Masjid Sultan Ismail (MSI) but I'm not really satisfied with the photos I captured. I try to find other natural setting to become as a framing in my photos but not successful. Sometimes, I don't know which subject should be in frame. I think I need to capture more photos so that I can get the photos that based on this framing concept.

2. Which of your photos do you think was the most successful and why?






I think the most successful photos that I captured is in Part 1 (Basic Composition) which is balance concept. In balance photos, I managed to captured the photos which is in symmetry balance. For me, the photos really captured based on the balance concepts beautifully. So, I'm kinda happy that I managed to capture balance photos successfully. I captured the balance photos of symmetry pattern of brick pathway and door mosque at MSI UTM.

3. How did this assignment change the way you view taking pictures?


This assignment did really change the view of me taking pictures. As they are many concepts that I can apply when capture photos so that my photos not look kinda boring as I might taking pictures with the same boring concept. So, later I could apply all of this 5 concepts in basic composition when capturing photos.  As well as for angles and interpretations, I must learn and use angle concepts to take pictures in different number of angles so that I can capture best shot of the object/subject. I hope in the future, I can create beautiful photos creatively and beautifully. InsyaaAllah.

4. Other thoughts on the process.

Along the way to capture all those photos, I often talked to myself, how really difficult to take a good photos. Plus, I need to follow the 5 concepts very well in basic composition. As well as for angles and interpretations. This task makes me feel challenged as I need to find a suitable spots in UTM campus only to create those photos. Anyway, there must be a good reasons why Dr. Jamal asked us to capture photos at university campus. So, I try to complete the assignments even for me as a beginner feels difficult to capture photos that really turn out as good photos.
